Treatment and Recycling of Hazardous Waste

Conditioning of Dusts, Sludge, and Liquids

Dust, ash, various bulk materials, or sludges are humidified, liquefied, stabilized, or granulated. The result is a portable end product for disposal or Recycling.

 

Thermal Treatment of Soils, Sludge, Suspensions, or other Hazardous Waste

AVA develops and delivers turnkey (mobile) complete plants for preparation of contaminated recyclables and waste, always perfectly adapted to your needs.

Sample applications include the treatment of contaminated filters and decanter sludge, treatment of contaminated soil and drilling mud, treatment of mercury waste, or solvent recovery.

Handling of Radioactive Materials

AVA supplies specially designed evaporators and dewaterers for ion exchanger sludges and resins generated in operational nuclear power plants. These and other concentrated, highly radioactive residue products can be cemented with specially designed AVA mixing technology before placed into final storage. For applications involving the dismantling and disposal of contaminated sites, contaminated waste water and sludge are concentrated in AVA evaporators, which reduces volumes and thus disposal costs.

Granulation of Carbon Black

AVA Ring Layer Mixers are in successful operation for the granulation of Carbon Black based on recycling material. It was traditionally produced out of oil by an incomplete incineration. But recently the extraction of Carbon Black out of recycled material such as pyrolized old tires gains in importance.
In the case of old tire pyrolysis, mainly Carbon Black, pyrolysis oil and pyrolysis gas are regained as valuable substances. In the final process step the Carbon Black is transformed into a finest granule in the AVA Ring Layer Mixer under the addition of liquid additives and the impact of very high gravitational forces.
Dependent on the upstream process steps, the recycled material is subject to slight variations. Therefore AVA provides the opportunity to perform granulation trials in its demo center. On the basis of their results the design parameters of the production plant are dimensioned.
In addition to the fast moving AVA Ring Layer Mixer as core unit, AVA has the ability to deliver a complete system out of granulator, dosage of soot and additives, subsequent packaging in PE- or big-bags and the complete system control.

Sterilizing of Hazardous Waste

AVA mixing reactors are ideally suited for steam sterilization of hazardous waste. The reactor acts as an autoclave, and temperature as well as pressure can be flexibly adjusted according to the applicable standard. Typical tasks include the treatment of infectious waste water, hospital, or laboratory waste. AVA sterilizing plants are also often available in a mobile version, for example, for use in field hospitals or on cruise ships.

Production of Refused Derived Fuels (RDF) and Mining Backfill Materials

The robust AVA horizontal mixing technology is ideally suited to the production of mining backfill materials or refused derived fuels (RDF).

The mining backfill base is composed of raw materials such as tailings, special rubble, blasting sand, filter press cake, and fly ash, which are added to the mixer. One method involves producing a dust-free, crumbly solid or granules, which is then, for example, transported underground via a downpipe and supplied as backfill. Another method involves preparing a suspension that is then pumped over long distances through industrial slurry pumps. Here, the base materials described above are mixed with water or slurry and then fed directly to the pump.

The production of refused derived fuels (RDF) is generally possible for all waste flows, whether special, industrial, or household waste. The core process method is to continuously homogenize the waste. Instead of feeding the waste in furnace batches, the AVA mixing system transforms these input batches into a waste range featuring constant calorific values and stable chemical properties. For difficult and highly diverse material flows, as is the case with hazardous waste, for example, the mixer can serve as a simultaneous buffer for up to two hours in addition to homogenizing the materials.
